Rite in the Rain TAC13 Overview
Do you prefer using pencils but fear they'll break when it matters most when out taking field notes? The Rite in the Rain Mechanical Pencil (3-Pack: Flat Dark Earth, Black & Olive Drab) may be the last pencil you'll ever need. This pencil is tough, reliable, made in the USA, and works no matter what. The 1.3mm lead won't snap at the tip or break in the shaft, so you can use it to write in a notebook just as easily as using it to mark lumber.
The knurled-metal grip and one-hand click lead advancement offer glove-friendly handling. The patented tip expands so the lead won't break, wobble, twist, or fall out in the field. Simply drop a single lead into the shaft under the eraser cap. Refills for the thick leads and clean erasers are available separately.

Big and soft pencil
This bomb-proof pencil lead is 1.3mm in diameter, fatter than any mechanical pencil I�ve ever used! I am glad I finally went big! My only concern is being able to find lead for this fantastic tool. I have not used it with the field books that I ordered with it so I cannot review their compatibility yet.

Solid mechanical pencils that write very smoothly.
Old mechanism was better
The new mechanism has all the downsides of standard mechanical pencils. Very durable as I expect from rite in the rain but not bk99. My pencils get hard use and ride in a sleeve pen holder resulting in broken lead etc. The old mechanism wouldn't jam no matter what and short leads could be easily cleared with no tools. Now I have to find old stock for high prices on the internet to get a bk99. Bring back the perfect mechanical pencil.
YE13 JAM!
Got the pencil and it was going great...then seemed to run out of lead. The advancing mechanism is just jammed up. Loading a new lead, no good. Then trying to clear using a new lead and then a 26AWG wire...no good. After using mechanical pencils for 40 yrs., neve had one jam like this. total waste of money on the pencil and refills.
I want to love this pencil more
I�m on my second of these pencils. Great weight. It fits nicely in my hand. I really like the bright orange color. The thicker lead is a life saver. I write pretty heavily, and thinner leads constantly break. I haven�t had this lead break once, and I�ve gone through two full sticks of it. Previously I used it for work. Now I use it for college. And this pencil, cannot keep up. The lead �slides� more often than not. Making writing difficult and choppy when this happens. I haven�t had this issue with other mechanical pencils, and it makes this pencil unbearable to deal with. I don�t know what causes it to happen. Nor do I know what causes it to go away. 80% of the time it seems fine. But the 20% of the time the lead slides, it�s terrible. My first pencil was replaced by the company when this issue wouldn�t go away. This second pencil hasn�t had as drastic of a failure, but it doesn�t feel reliable either. I have to carry an extra mechanical pencil in case this one is acting up. I will eventually transition to a different pencil once I use up the rest of my remaining replacement lead. I wish the older models were still available. I do not have one, but know people who do- these issues don�t plague the older models, it seems.
Perfect pencils
I work checking sprinkler systems, and im constantly writing notes. These pencils combined with the notepads work perfect for rough, very wet working conditions out in the field.
