Manfrotto 425B Reviews
A beast!
This is one of those cry once purchases. If you need it, nothing else will do. The gearing is all machined very well. The quality is apparent to anyone, even those not in the industry. But it operates smoothly, it is easy to adjust big modifiers from the ground, and it supports big Octabox sized modifiers with ease. You will want a geared base stand as it is about 33lbs without anything on it. You won't be lifting with one hand, tightening with the other unless you like risking fingers. Ballast the legs well - I keep 3 x 20lb bags on it. It comes with a ballast bag to put on the boom if you are running heavy setups. Recommended if you need it. Geared base stands are also not cheap. But once set up, it makes working overhead with large modifiers, easy, safe and repeatable.
LOVE IT!!
I bought one and shot with it and immediately bought another. These are heavy so don't buy it and think you'll put it on a light weight stand. I love the build and quality of the product and once you've used one,....you fall in love with the articulation they are capable of. Its a time saver, no fiddling with beauty dish or hair light placement, adjustments are very quick and easy and always spot on and stay that way. Highly recommended.
Great studio arm.
I had been using a C-stand with a large arm for back lights. That was fine for smaller rooms but was not strong or safe enough for larger backlights such as 4' soft boxes. Not only does this easily handle the problem but it has 3 crank handles to adjust the light on each axis easily and precisely. I would give it 5 stars except that it is expensive, bulky to transport and one of the cranks is far from the other 2. I recommend a heavy duty crank up stand for this like the Kupo KS401212.
10/10 would buy it again.
This thing is amazing. Gotta have a straight down light source on a scene but no where to hang it? Use this guy. It weighs about 35 lbs but the cranks are super amazing to use to rotate and position your light just where you want it without much stress.
Bigger is sometimes better......
Suspending a profoto head with a 3x4 soft box over a pool for an underwater shoot... I wanted to make sure that nothing electrical fell into the water - good underwater models are hard to find. I already owned a Manfrotto Super Boom - the Mega Boom was definitely a move up. Solid Secure Safe and no one electrocuted...
MEGA BOOM!
Seriously amazing! we use our boom day in and day out, we had a dinky one before and this is the real deal.
It's the best
I've wanted one of these for some time. It's everything I thought it would be, just what I need.
Perfect for an offset load
I purchased this boom to handle the offset torque load of a Mola Setti and a 35D Parabolix modifier. I started with a Matthews Junior Boom but it could not resist the rotational torque even if I reefed on all the extension handles. This Monfrotto Mega Boom is perfect. Easily adjusts lights in any orientation. Adjustment is so easy I find myself redirecting the light in different positions during a shoot to change the look and feel of the portrait image. Im using it with the Manfrotto 083NW crank up light stand that can support 99 pounds. If you need to go higher than 8 ft., you will need to lighten the load. The boom weighs 33 pounds, with a 42 pound sand bag to offset the extension I am using and a 15 pound light / modifier combination, Im at 90 pounds total load. The boom adjustment levers utilize worm wheels and gears that are self-locking. Super solid and extremely well built.
