Small in size, but big on features, the Fredenstein V.A.S. Compressor is a single-channel FET compressor packed with high-performance circuitry and flexible controls. From the proprietary FET and dual input transistors to the OPA2 op-amp and USA-made transformer, the V.A.S. Compressor is made to hold its own in the studio or on tour. The compact half-width unit, which can be rack-mounted alongside a second V.A.S Compressor, also features a built-in universal power supply for operation around the world.

In addition to standard controls for input, ratio, attack, release, and make-up gain, the V.A.S. Compressor offers a mix knob for easy parallel compression and separate meters for gain reduction and output level. Plus, it boasts a switchable and bandwidth-adjustable sidechain with a 1/4" insert point, allowing you to finesse the compression or trigger it from an external signal. Not only does the compressor provide balanced XLR and 1/4" I/O, but it also has a 1/4" TRS jack for stereo linking two V.A.S. Compressors.

Proprietary FET

The V.A.S. Compressor is a single-channel FET compressor with stereo link capability. It incorporates Fredenstein's proprietary Reverse-Mancini FET architecture for increased linearity and noise performance.

Op-Amp and Transformer

The output stage consists of Fredenstein's high-performance OPA2 discrete operational amplifier coupled to a high-quality, American-made steel core transformer. As with all Fredenstein products, the OPA2 is not a copy of an older design, but a completely new circuitry manufactured in SMT technology.

High-Quality Signal Path

Matched and integrated dual input transistors guarantee vastly improved specifications compared to older designs. The OPA2, following the tradition of well-known manufacturers, is socketed and can be exchanged without tools. The industry-standard pin configuration makes it compatible with many manufacturers. To achieve the highest sonic performance, no polarized capacitors, electrolytic or tantalum, are deployed in the signal path.

Comprehensive and Versatile Controls

Overall the V.A.S. Compressor supports a wide variety of different sounds from smooth and clean to aggressive and smashed. As a truly flexible compressor, it features rotary controls for input gain, attack and release times, ratio, sidechain bandwidth (low-cut filter), make-up gain, and wet/dry mixing (parallel compression) as well as illuminated switches for bypass, stereo link, and sidechain filter.

Easy Operation

Controlling the operation of the V.A.S. Compressor is very easy due to its separate gain-reduction and output-level meters. Gain reduction is indicated with 12 LEDs ranging from 1 to 16 dB and the output level in the range from -30 to +20 dB (0 dB = +4 dBu). Other professional features are a hard bypass when powered off and a three-second turn-on delay to suppress pops as well as a remote bypass function in stereo link mode. Only one bypass switch has to be engaged to put both units in bypass mode for easy stereo confidence checks, with or without compression.

I/O Connectors

The rear of the compressor offers balanced XLR and 1/4" TRS jacks for inputs and outputs. Additionally, there is a 1/4" TRS link jack for stereo linking. The front panel sports a 1/4" TRS insert point for the sidechain.

Universal Power Supply

For easy touring and recording around the world, the V.A.S. Compressor has a built-in universal power supply ranging from 90 to 240 VAC (50/60 Hz).
