It Works

I bought the LensCoat cover for my new Nikkor 100-400mm to protect it from minor dings and dents. It seems to work OK. Sometimes the cover fitting over the 100-400's multifunction ring just aft of the lens' LCD window is difficult to turn; I think the cover for this ring is rubbing against adjacent cover pieces and increases the friction enough to prevent easy turning of this ring. Luckily, so far I haven't had use for the multifunction ring, but I may in the future, and if so this difficult turning ring may blossom into a hassle. The other thing I don't like on this LensCoat cover is for the forward portion of the lens that extends maybe 3 to 4 when zooming, it is covered with a light fabric camo sleeve with elastic bands on both ends. The idea is this fabric can accommodate the lengthening of the lens as it adjusts back and forth. Unfortunately this does not work in practice as the fabric sleeve gets twisted as one turns the zoom ring. Then if one zooms the lens from 400mm back down to 100mm all this loose fabric of the sleeve gets bunched up between the the part that is being zoomed and the focus ring, and one can't zoom back all the way to 100mm because of all this bunched-up fabric; not good. My solution to this problem? Not use this fabric camo sleeve. This isn't a perfect solution as when zoomed out to 400mm this portion of the kens is not covered with camo...so I wasted a portion of this camo cover kit...I don't like that as I feel I paid a lot of money for the cover, and now I am not getting my money's worth. This short-sighted design of the cover for the portion where the lens zooms needs to have a better solution for the price I paid for the cover!
