Sporting the large light bucket users have come to expect from a Dob, the Sky-Watcher Flextube 300P SynScan 12" f/4.9 Dobsonian GoTo AZ Telescope gives users great performance at a reasonable price. Its large parabolic Borosilicate primary mirror is treated with an aluminum coating that brings its reflectivity to over 94%, with a secondary mirror obstruction of just 5% by area. Unlike traditional Dobsonians that tend to be bulky and unwieldy, the Flextube's patented truss design allows it to retract to just 36" for easier transport and storage and extends to 55" with an impressive 1500mm focal length for observation.
- 12" (305mm) aperture is able to resolve dim deep-space objects like wispy nebulae and galaxies
- Fast f/4.9 focal ratio ensures a wide field of view & maximum light throughput
- For astrophotography, the fast focal ratio will result in shorter exposure times than "slower" OTAs while achieving similar results
- Long 1500mm focal length helps to produce the fast focal ratio and magnification range
- Collapsible truss system eliminates the need to disassemble the telescope after use and saves space during transport and storagemeasuring 36" when trusses are retracted and55" when set up
- Borosilicate parabolic primary mirror with aluminum coatings that bring the reflectivity to 94%
- Resolution: 0.38 arcsec (Dawes Limit), 0.46 arcsec (Rayleigh Limit)
- 70mm diameter secondary mirror; Obstruction: 23% by diameter, 5% by area
- 58.5" eyepiece height when aimed directly overhead at the zenith
- Built-in Wi-Fi module allows the use of the SynScan smartphone app to control the baseapp is available for Apple and Android devices
- Wired hand controller, powered by the mount, provides all the same functionalities as the app
- User-friendly menu system

Sky-Watcher GoTo Reviews
GoTo drive defective
First time using this scope, I discovered the GoTo drive motor was defective, specifically the altitude motor. Motor stops slewing upwards completely after a few degrees of movement, turning the telescope into an expensive manual use scope only. Highly disappointed after spending so much money on this scope, with high expectations. Had a 14 Skywatcher GoTo Dob that had zero issues at all, now I'm angry I sold it and stepped down to this almost useless scope. Now let's see how the whole return process goes...
Orders of magnitude improvement in astro-fun
I have both the GoTo and non-GoTo versions of this scope. My skies are typical NE Ohio hazy when not down-right cloudy, and nowhere near what you get in the western US. Star hopping to find objects of interest is difficult. A 12 scope will see them IF you can find them. Having worked with the non-GoTo 12 Sky-Watcher first, I can say without reservation that I should have just bought the GoTo model. The price differential isn't trivial, but it will make astronomy a more enjoyable and longer lasting pursuit. The GoTo system is easy to set up and align, and will then find objects too dim even for the 50mm finder. The tracking feature simplifies astrophotography, even with a Barlow. The fit and finish of the telescope itself are excellent, with a number of refinements in the mount relative to the non-GoTo model (in addition to the motor drives and SynScan computer). shipped the Sky-Watcher six weeks ARO, a month or two before I expected it. Their price and service are top-shelf, as always.
everything I asked for
The telescope is well made quality through out so great optics and nice finish on all surfaces. I am waiting to get the correct adapters so I can begin photographing all the wonders of night sky.
Believe I made the right purchase but...
I know I'm going to love this telescope. But it will take some getting used to a Dobsonian. I have had it out only two times, so this is an initial reaction. The alignment of stars in the finderscope is difficult. For the money spent, the finderscope should come equipped with a diagonal. It's almost impossible to line up on a star for anyone older than 30. I have already purchased an Orion 9x50 diagonal finderscope for $87 and I'm hopeful this will help. I have also taped a laser to the scope to help me move the scope close to the target, or else I would be needing physical therapy. Also purchased the shroud to cover the struts to protect the mirrors from dust and light. Weight is manageable once it is split into two parts for moving.
One Foot Light Bucket!
This is my second Skywatcher Collapsible GoTo Dobsonian, the first being the 14 version of this scope. Long story short, I sold that scope since it was way too big and heavy for one person to handle easily. This one is perfect, and moving the base as one whole unit and then the OTA outdoors is easily manageable. GoTo function works great and enables you to track down DSOs and the ice giants Uranus and Neptune with ease. Can hardly wait to get this scope to some nice dark sky site for some serious viewing. Well worth the cost, much more manageable than the 14 or 16 and is quite the astronomy workhorse.
High Quality, High Value, High Appreciation
Here we go. It was a long rollercoaster ride that lead to this review but now it's all behind me and I can look back on it all. I was in the market for a 12 scope that could travel easily since I live just outside Philadelphia. I wanted this Sky-Watcher 12 first but it was out of stock everywhere. I even called Canada... and Canada said nope out of stock, sorry. So I bought the 12 Explore Scientific Truss Tube Dobsonian. It cost a bit more, but I know their eyepieces are supposed to be superb and trusted their scopes to be the same. Also it was actually IN STOCK. After a couple days of waiting and much anticipation... It came, I was thrilled. I put it together almost done I got to the focuser and...It was swiveling in its base and actually fell out into my hand when I was making a video to ask for help from customer support. This could've easily happened when I wasn't around or when I was attacking the secondary cage and destroyed the mirror, which would be a disaster, but thankfully ES & support together helped me find the solution. Okay disaster averted. It took me tightened 2 extremely low key hexes that I feel I was never supposed to even be aware but no problem back to business. I've got the secondary cage on. Im ready for my first collimation. Just have to tilt the down so I can see the laser on the donut sticker and... A weight inside the primary mirror box separates from its glue and falls on the mirror. Horror, calamity, disaster, pain, tears, dismay. I was offered 15% off on another scope from ES. Thanks but no thanks. I exchanged with for this Sky-Watcher Collapsible 12. Which I wanted in the first place and was willing to wait. Now that I have it and have enjoyed a number of nights out including a great dark sky at Nockamixon I can clearly state that this scope is better in every respect except for the secondary collimation knobs that the ES 12 had. That is such a good idea and something I wish everyone used but unfortunately that novel engineering effort wasn't put into the rest of it. With this Sky-Watcher you simply loosen 3 screws and pull up the secondary section of the tube sitting on 3 SOLID rods which takes 2 seconds. Much easier than the delicate dance of attaching the cage to the ES after joining the numerous rods together with one hand as you somehow screw the 2 joined tubes onto each individual hole of the 2ndary cage a number of times on the ES. Everyone at the Nockamixon star party was hovering around MY new scope. Everyone looking through it said it was among the best views of a scope they had ever seen. I packed this scope+base as well as an 80mm refractor+tripod, 20X80 binoculars+ tripod, 10x40 binocs, all my eyepieces and accessories and 2 other people in a Jeep Cherokee for the event. Did I mention you actually get accessories with this scope? You get a few eyepieces and more with this. Not with the ES. I am so happy fate ensured that this was the scope I ended up with. If that wright on the ES detached the very first time I moved it vertically how could I be sure it would happen the 20th time, after a drastic temp. change, or years down the line. Such a large weight on such a vulnerable place with so little glue! Like I said, I am so tremendously happy with the Sky-Watcher. I upgraded from an 8 DOB with the intent of buying the scope that would last me the rest of my life. I'm confident I have it now. The ES didn't even last 10 minutes fully assembled. Want to go out of my way to say the and their support team was top notch throughout. None of my difficulties were their fault and yet they helped me as much as they possibly could and made the return & exchanged process possibly the easiest part of this whole story. I still intend to get some ES eyepieces someday, but I will not and I recommend to anyone else in the market to look elsewhere when buying telescopes. This is just my experience however. Maybe I just had bad luck. But all I can do is relay what happened to me. Sorry if ES doesn't like this. Their support team was great to. I just wish certain people on their assembly team did better the day the built my particular item. Thank you Sky-Watcher for making such an incredible product. Thank you for charging almost $500 less than the scope that failed me. Thank you to Sky-Watcher and for coming through for me during such a difficult time.
