Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR Overview
The king of super telephotos, the AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR is the longest lens in Nikon's lineup, and with it brings one of the most advanced optical designs along with superior focusing and VR performance and full weather-sealing. The lens construction features a pair of extra-low dispersion glass elements along with two fluorite elements, which enhance sharpness, clarity, and color rendering by reducing a variety of aberrations. The fluorite elements also contribute to a lighter overall weight. Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have also been applied to the optical system in order to minimize flare and ghosting when working in bright and backlit conditions.
Beyond the optics, this super tele is also characterized by a Silent Wave Motor, which produces fast, near-silent autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to 4.5 stops. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.
In addition to the lens itself, the AF-S Teleconverter TC800-1.25E ED is included, and its 1.25x magnification increases the effective focal length to 1000mm. Its dedicated design includes one extra-low dispersion element to maintain the optical qualities of the lens, and it also retains AF and VR capabilities.
This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Z6/Z7 with FTZ Mount Adapter, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR Reviews
Great Lens
I am a wildlife photographer and I have been aching to buy this lens for a long time. Finally, being in a position to afford it, I have found that it is everything that I could have wanted. The reach is fantastic, the images are sharp and the focus is fast. As expected, the weight is an issue, but I can get great photos handheld for short stretches. However, I have found that to use this lens for a full day, a monopod is a requirement to get proper stability. Without it, the images are difficult to keep in the frame as fatigue starts to set in.
Simply Amazing
Beyond Expectations Razor Sharp!!! Fast and Quiet Focusing Not as big and bulky as I had expected. IF, you own a 400mm 2.8 you will find this handles very similar
Superb, smaller and lighter than expected
This lens is perfect in every respect. Tripod collar is silky, autofocus immediate, sharpness jawdropping. I would like to complement for its remarkable service in this purchase. Despite 's careful boxing, UPS severely damaged the Nikon case in which my first lens shipped, and although the lens itself showed no damage and seemed to work fine, exchanged the potentially damaged lens with no question. The customer service rep understood my concern that if there were problems with the lens down the line, Nikon would not repair under warranty if it determined impact damage to be the culprit. Its brand new replacement arrived exactly one week later, which I thought was remarkably quick. There was no argument, no discussion, just an instantly issued RMA. I can't recommend highly enough.
It lives up to the hype.
I have been wanting to upgrade my old AF-s 500 for some time. It was a tossup between the 600 and 800. Most of what I read and what I saw on uTube didn't really answer the question. But the one thing that stuck in my mind was the raves about the sharpness of the 800mm. Another thing that was mentioned a lot was the speed with which it focused when paired with a D4s. As my title says, it lives up to both claims. I mostly shoot birds and I have never come home with so many keepers. For most shots, post processing consists of a little cropping and maybe some tonal adjustment depending on the light. The lens is obviously heavy. That's just a fact, not a criticism. I do wish that Nikon would incorporate an Arca-Swiss groove into the lens foot, and come up with a more practical 'lens cap'. It's a lot of money, but I think it was well spent.
Will surpass other Nikkors
This is not the situation where this lens measure up to other Nikkors....This lens will surpass almost all other Nikkors. The big competition to this lens, are those in it's same league...the 600F4, the 500F4,the 400F2.8 and the 300F2.8. I own the old 300F2.8 and 400F3.5 from the 1980s, also the 50-300F4.5. Regular Nikkors can't measure to this league on their own....
Bitingly sharp
I know a lot of bird and sports photographers highly rate this lens and rightfully so. This might surprise some of you but this is my go for lens for weddings. I had Sigma's bigma 2.8 zoom, now while the speed was great in dark lighting it was heavy and poor reach 500mm. My assistant is happy that I retired that lens and not him. So instead I got the Nikkor for the close up of the ring shot....i know ....i know before you say it. No I didn't use flash, instead the trusty VR coped very well in the Gothic church. It does test your long shot technique, but if after two more weeks of training you assistant still wobbles get a new assistant.
F'in awesome lens!
It's not as heavy as it looks, the AF is super fast, the bouquet is fantastic and the sharpness/clarity is mind-blowing! Yes - it is very expensive but when you make your living with photography it's probably worth it. I love it!
Wonderful!!!
Great lens -as every reviewer, only positives. I had it for only a couple of weeks and have been practicing with it. So far I have used it with both, D4s (for birds) and D800E (for moon and stationary items), for birding moon pictures, and some pictures of very distant items. Awesome pics. I have the Sigma 15-600 with 1.4x shooting at 850mm, approx, and the Nikkor 200-500 +1.4x. However pics with Nikkor 800mm + 1.25x are clearer and faster. It definitely helps to use a tripod or bean bag....I am very excited and happy with my acquisition
