The Emesser ATE 308 Set from Ambient Recording is an ultracompact true condenser figure-8 microphone with accessories, intended to convert any boom mic on the fly into an M/S stereo system. It allows you to add a bit of stage to dialogue but also capture textured room tones or even ambiance sounds in pristine stereo without the need to change your setup, no matter what mic is in use.
Featuring a high-quality real condenser powered on 48V phantom, it delivers an enhanced dynamic range required for critical recordings. Compared to the predecessor model ATE 208, the ATE 308 offers a redesigned capsule merged with the preamp design of Ambient's Soundfish Hydrophone series. The result is a warm, natural sound with the perceived noise floor cut by more than 50%.
In addition to the Schoeps windscreen and zippered soft case, the Emesser Set comes complete with a Rycote ATEC-R clip (for mounting the Emesser on your existing shotgun mic) and the ATEK Y-cable, which combines the Emesser's mini-XLR output with your existing shotgun's XLR output into a balanced 5-pin XLR.
The mic's miniature size and specialized accessories make it an economical solution for converting your favored shotgun mic into an M/S setup, where your existing shotgun provides the "mid" signal and the Emesser serves as the "side" mic.
The frequency response of the Emesser was tuned to match the acoustic pattern of typical boom mics at 90° with a characteristic and distinct bass roll-off, enabling seamless transitions between mono and stereo applications without alteration of the sound characteristics. When used in a stereo configuration, the result is a distinguished stereo perception with pronounced presence, minimal negative phase correlation at the low end, and excellent suppression of handling noise.
