Tilta GSS-T01 Overview
Create dramatic, smooth cinematic moves using your DJI RS 2 handheld gimbal without back or arm strain with the Float Handheld Gimbal Support System from Tilta. The Float system features an adjustable vest, stabilizer arm, adjustable gimbal extension post, wireless thumb controller, wireless receiver module, Gold mount battery plate, monitor bracket, power and control cables, smartphone mounting bracket, tool kit, and a carry case to store and transport the entire system.
The Float system supports an RS 2 gimbal rig up to 22 lb, and it mounts onto the extension post. The post can extend from 19.6 to 39.4" for just the right height for your shot, and it mounts onto the stabilizer arm. The stabilizer arm supports approximately 31.5" of up and down movement to keep the stabilizer even steadier. The stabilizer arm mounts on the adjustable vest that fits waists from 23.6 to 47.2" around to create comfortable support and take the load off your back and arms.
The Gold mount battery plate mounts onto the rig and allows you to power accessories and your gimbal via the system's extension post using a single, optional high-capacity battery and the included power cable. The wireless thumb controller mounts onto the rig so you can control the gimbal's movement without needing to be close to the gimbal. It connects to the receiver via 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi from up to 229' away (line-of-sight) and features a shoe mount so it can mount onto a handle or other rigging. The included smartphone mount allows you to add a smartphone to control your gimbal as well as preview the image, and the monitor bracket allows you to add an optional monitor to your rig.
Optional accessories are also available separately, such as an RS battery counterweight bracket, TB50 battery plate, and bottom counterweight bracket.

A great invention but impossible to put together
I would have loved to use my Dji gimbal with this, but parts were missing and it was impossible to put together. When I had to return it, I had to pay close to $70 to ship it back since I bought it directly from the company's website and not Amazon. Some little screws and springs were just randomly in the box and I didn't know where those springs came out of. I got a full refund, minus about 30$ so I lost around $100 on this adventure. it was worth it though. I think the idea is amazing and much cheaper than Ariri Trinity system. It made me look into other systems that won't require batteries. Another downside to this was that the battery was not included. So not only were a lot of parts missing, but the batteries were not included and it felt that I would have to gather bits and pieces of parts from all over the place to be able to put this thing together. It would be nice is this Tilta Float came with everything included to put the system together.
Well made but requires some modifications
I have been operating Steadicam's (non professionally) for a few years and jumped on the Gimbal bandwagon when the RS2 came out. While the Float is made well it is lacking in a couple of areas: 1. The belt is not sized for those of us on the larger size (6'-1 250#). This can be overcome by adding a belt and buckle. However I don't think velcro is the best option for hanging out your gear, no matter the operators size. 2. The arm to belt connector is difficult to adjust well. The setup has no jack screws or other way to make small adjustments. A traditional socket block setup would have been much better. 3. The post has no video signal pass thru. This really isn't a knock against the Float as it wasn't designed to have a monitor at the bottom stage. However, some of us have a permanent bend in the neck which seeks out a picture down there. It would have been nice to have an HDMI or SDI cable run thru the post along with the power. 4. The RS2 adapter at the top stage is well made but the use of a NATO rail leaves a large (2mm) gap allowing the gimbal to move from side to side. I plan on machining a spacer for it when I have some free time. A dovetail would have been a much better interface. 5. The battery plate should have included internal wiring. It really isn't a battery plate, more of a battery hanger. You still have to use a battery with Ptap so you can plug in the post. It is also sized for micro batteries which makes it difficult to mount full size gold mounts needed to balance the system. On the plus side, the arm itself seems to be very well made and designed. While it isn't fully iso-elastic, it does feel very smooth to operate. The lift adjustment for both sections works as expected and smoothly. Much better than most low end arms I have seen. It may actually be better made than my Steadicam A15 arm. Overall the Float is a well made and mostly well thought out product. I am still happy I have it in my inventory, it just needs some tweaks to better suit my operating style.
Harder to use than I expected
The belt system to support this is not very comfortable. It puts all the weight right on my lower back. One of the reasons I bought this rig is because I thought it would put the weight of the camera rig on my hips and help me with my camera op back issues I have. No luck there. I can tell it will be a great steady cam type set up if it had a vest rather than a belt. Also had to buy a goPro battery and charger that was not mentioned as required to run the system. That should be in the required accessories list.
Great device
Tilt float review I work as a Cam Op for reality tv shows. Bought the float in January and was lucky to get it on a Mtv Cribs shoot (yes it's back) and recently a big dating show for Netflix. I'm still leaning as my experience is mainly gimbals. Just the basic low to high move impresses those that I have used it for. To make this thing more comfortable you do need to buy additional parts. There's a guy on YouTube and Facebook named Vaho Mat who is a much watch for listing how to balance/operate and for mods that will put the float into v1.5 territory. For me I love it overall! It's becoming my gateway drug for wanting to take a stedicam courses and do proper stedicam and incorporating the classic techniques into my future float operating and then get that minimum Year of stedicam in that the Arri Trinity inventor said one needs to graduate to the full Arri Trinity. Some wants for a float 2 would be to have a better monitor mount system (which Vaho Mat has a good work around) and to have a video out/in connection in the post like a stedicam/ trinity does. I use a ninja v monitor and a feel world monitor and having a long hdmi cable going from camera to monitor from the current cameras I fly (fx6 and fx3) is sometimes a pain and gets in the way sometimes when I'm doing those low to high moves.
Not Great
Belt is incredibly uncomfortable and not designed well. All the weight is put on your lower back and every time I take the belt off after use I'm in incredible pain. The strap that's included for heavier setups only works if you're the right height (It was too loose for me, therefore, it provided no extra support) The connection of the arm to the belt is difficult to adjust and also not a good design if you need to remove the arm from the belt. There's no quick release so if you take it off the belt and reattach it you have to adjust it to the correct balance again after you attach it every time. No signal pass through for any monitor-it's designed to ONLY use a smart phone and the included transmitter which I personally hate. The balance of the FLOAT itself really caters to operating the post in a horizontal position. By this I mean even when you balance it properly, the post will not stay upright if you let go, it will always slowly fall into a horizontal position. This makes it nearly impossible to operate it in a vertical position if you wanted an eye level shot because you'd have to physically grip the post to both operate AND keep the post upright. All in all very disappointed with this product. Great, affordable concept, but not so great execution. I'm trying to return mine and waiting to see if something is released in the future with many necessary improvements.
