pixl-latr Film Holder for Digitizing/Scanning Overview
If you've ever tried to digitise a negative or transparency with a digital camera, you'll know that two of the biggest headaches are keeping the film in place and flat and backlighting it in a uniform manner. pixl-latr is a low cost, simple but effective film holder for solving both of these problems when digitising 35mm, 120 (up to 6x12), and 5x4 film formats.
Since launching pixl-latr, we have made three key improvements to the design - v1.3 benefits from all of these improvements. The first two improvements are to the frame and diffuser which are now made to tighter tolerances. In addition to these tweaks, we are now including stick-on non-slip feet. These feet provide just enough friction to stop pixl-latr from slipping around on a surface whilst still allowing it to be moved with ease. pixl-latr Film Holder for Digitizing/Scanning Reviews
Awful, won't hold together
I had high hopes, considering this is a $50 piece of plastic. But the material doesn't concern me if it works. The base constantly pops off with fasteners that don't work, the base is warped longitudinally which I'm sure contributes to this, and if you pull your film through often it will scratch it. If that doesn't scratch it, the whole thing falling apart every time you breathe on its fasteners will. I have gotten good scans with this, but that's not without battling it along the way, and the help of additional equipment like clamps. Save your money. You'd be better off with a piece of hdpe, and black construction paper with a square cut out of it.
Pixl-later film digitizer
It doesn't get any easier to digitize a film image to a printable digital file. Directions are clear, all the parts fit well and with a simple light source you are in business. It' a slow procedure, one negative at a time, and that is what it was designed for. Simple and it works and it get's an A from me. Jack
Easy fix for a flaw.
The Pixl-Ater works fine with flat negatives but won't stay closed with my father's WWII negatives (some historically significant) that curled after decades in storage. The solution? Magnetic strips keep the Pixl-Ater closed and allow it to open slightly when inserting strips of 35mm negatives. I have had success using this with an inexpensive light board, FF, and 100mm macro.
