Zacuto Z-C70ZM Reviews
Makes it totally useful!
THIS is the answer. After experiencing an epic fail while filming with a C70 in bright sunny snow, (could not see the viewfinder and it has no EVF) the addition of this well-built hunk of genius makes the C70 my favorite lightweight rig!
Premium product!
I've been using Zacuto gear since 5D MK2 days. Yes, they're expensive but the stuff is well designed and works (for years). I love my C70 but with my aging eyes, I couldn't see all that tiny letters on that tiny (flimsy) screen. EVF would've been awesome but it is what it is. This thing is very nicely made, as it is with all their gear. At first I was skeptical about the mounting mechanism. At a closer look, the locking mechanism completely fills the eyelet with an oval metal hardware. Then the outside of the eyelet is clamped by the arm... what that means is that there is maximum amount of contact surface to maximize rigidity of the connection. This is very important since the pressure of your head pushing on the viewfinder would impart some movements to the joint if not properly secured. Especially since that screen is so flimsy. But I would not pack my bag with this on the camera, nor will this stand up to a shallow drop or a knee whack. Yes, if this attaches to the rig, it would be even stiffer. But that means having to buy their rig. I respect the fact they designed this to be used standalone. If they make a swappable arm for their cage, I would buy that and their cage... Oh by the way this clamping mechanism will scratch the painted eyelet of your camera. Boo Hoo.
Good. Almost great.
The C70 is such a great camera, but I like many, wish a viewfinder was on it. Short of powering a separate device, I think this is the best solution out there if you own a Z-finder. This is almost as good as it can be, and it does work, but the connection to the camera strap loop on the camera is odd. It is designed with a spring and a pin that very easily (it will almost certainly pop out on you at some point) comes off of the mount and cannot be used without it. I wish that Zacuto had developed a better way to attach it to the camera strap mount or develop a way to attach it to a cage. It works for now, but if you are going to be taking this on and off the camera during the day as I am, it is more tedious than it needs to be.
