Teradek Spark 4K Reviews
Works great... when it works.
It took a few rounds and some firmware updates to get it to sync. When we finally got it working, it sometimes takes resetting the receiver to get it to connect. I would ensure you leave it somewhere accessible. Additionally, the battery lasts no more than 30-40 minutes currently. I've got a warranty claim processing, but it can take 1-2 weeks with no advance replacement option and we pay shipping. They offered for us to spend $90 to get to the front of the line. When its synced and working, its great 0-delay video.
New firmware and repair
Changer the region and updated firmware then it finally worked. Wish it worked straight out of the box.works well now with no delay. Little noisy but still great for 4k wirelessly
Not working as of yet
Wanted to be excited about using this on a live set. After charging when I got them in, I hooked up to my Nikon z7 dslr, and hdmi never received signal. Tested 5 different hdmi cables, and even ran the transmitter from my laptop. No video signal. I have used the app to reset, to redownload the firmware, and pretty much everything I can think of. So far it seems the transmitter will not take any signal that is given it. I have emailed teradek today. I will give update. I have been happy with two other teradek tx/rx sets, so hopefully this is a one off issue. Just killed the mood for now. Also, I know this unit is brand new, but it seems there isn't much integration with things, ie, the registration doesn't work on the app, and when I try to do it on their website, there isn't even a spark 4k product to choose from on the product drop down. Feel this product may have been sent out a bit quick. Who knows.
Works as advertised
The delay is very close to none, which is critical since I'm using in a recording studio. It would be great if the communication was 2 way, allowing for remote focus, tally light etc. Maybe a future feature?
A fantastic wireless video transmission system
Officially Teradek says there is less that 1 millisecond of delay but I couldn't see any delay with my eyes. This is a big step up from other wireless kits from folks like Hollyland that claim .08 seconds but in reality it's more than like twice that. This really doesn't have any latency. The feed is so instant that you can pull focus with the Spark 4k. Even though they don't exactly bill this as a system to pull focus. They seem to be pushing this as more of a live stream or event solution. However wireless video systems designed specifically to pull focus are so incredibly expensive but I'm happy to say you can use this in your regular video production shoots to pull focus without issue. The other big selling point for me was the quality of the actual video stream you get. You can get up to 4k 30fps 10bit 4.2.2 in the actual stream. Again, this is a big step up from most system that only offer 1080p 60fps max with video quality that is just terrible. I am not a wireless video guru so the fact that these were so incredibly easy to get up and running sealed the deal for me. Literally just turned on both units and they automatically synced up. No extra button presses to get things running. Nothing to really setup in any menus. Just turn them one, briefly wait and your video signal is flowing.
