With an incredibly user-friendly interface and a reputation as an industry standard in noise gating, the DS201 from Drawmer is an innovative dual-channel noise gate, providing sophisticated noise attenuation facilities such as gating, ducking, and AHD (attack, hold, decay) envelope control as well as threshold, range, and bypass control. The DS201 offers loads of functionality with the ability to accept gate triggers from internal and external sources (via the 1/4" insert) and can use external signals to not only control the gate and use one sound to gate another, but it can also be used simply as a filter through the Key Listen function.

Variable low- and high-pass filters allow for frequency-dependent gating effects, and the maximum attack time of the DS201 is exceptionally fast, within microseconds, allowing you to preserve the natural attack of your signals. Classic Drawmer traffic-light metering provides clear indication of the gate and threshold status, and each channel has its own meter and balanced I/O, allowing you to process two independent signals or one stereo-linked signal. This unit includes an AC power cord to get you started.

Variable Filter-Dependent Gating

Sometimes, certain signals and microphone setups can prove tedious and problematic to noise gate. For example, if a gate is applied to a snare drum, a hi-hat can often unintentionally cause the gate to open, resulting in the hi-hats bleeding into the snare mic, while attempts to reign this effect in through the threshold can result in a failure to capture the light snare hits, ruining a performance.

Drawmer's solution to this problem is the inclusion of two variable filters, one high-pass and one low-pass, which act upon the sidechain keying circuitry. By setting the output switch to Key Listen, the user can hear the action of the filters and adjust them to reject high-frequency spillage from the hi-hats. This now enables the gate to only open on the lower frequencies present in the snare drum.

Key Listen

In normal operation, the filter only affects the way the gate responds (opens) to the incoming program material; it does not have any direct effect on the output signal. But when Key Listen is enabled, the effect of the key filter on the program material is heard at the output and the audio signal is not routed through gate. Normally this is used to monitor the effect of the filter to assist in tuning into the specific key source sound, but it can be used as a bracketing filter, making it simple to remove unwanted frequencies without using the resources that a more complicated equalizer would utilize.

Key Input

The unit can be switched to accept a key input, which allows the gate to be triggered externally. An example of this would be to use a snare drum signal to open the gate on a separate ambient microphone to create a natural-sounding alternative to gated reverb.

Ultrafast Attack Time

The very fast attack of the DS201 means that it can open in a matter of microseconds, preserving the natural attack of whatever sound is being gated and using comprehensive envelope controls mean that the gain can be changed at whatever rate best suits the material being processed. With vocals for example, a fairly fast attack is needed to prevent clipping the leading consonants but a slower release time will prevent the end of words from being gated too early and will also fade out any noise gradually rather than cutting it off abruptly. This latter point is very important as the human ear is far more sensitive to rapidly changing noise levels than to a constant low-level noise.
