Schoeps DESERT ISLAND SET MK 2XS Overview
The matte-gray Schoeps Desert Island Stereo Set with MK 2XS Capsules is a versatile microphone kit designed for capturing high-quality stereo recordings in various settings. It includes two CMC 1U miniature Colette microphone preamps, two MK 2XS omnidirectional matched capsules (with their matching certificate), and two SG20 stand clamps, all neatly packaged in an ultracompact Peli hard case for protection. This portability and rugged build make the set ideal for field-recording applications.
The MK 2XS capsule's considerable, high-frequency-response elevation (at 0°) compensates for high-frequency-response losses and delivers a flat frequency-response in the diffuse sound field. The MK 2XS is usually used as a room microphone beyond the reverberation radius in larger rooms. If used near a sound source, the sound is brilliant. To ensure accurate stereo capture in any application, the two capsules are factory-matched for frequency response and sensitivity.
The matte gray Schoeps CMC 1 U is a miniature Colette Series microphone amplifier offering uncompromising high fidelity in a lightweight and ultracompact form factor for studio recording, broadcast, and live stage applications. Presented as an alternative to the renowned Schoeps CMC 6 amplifier, the CMC 1 U is compatible with all existing MK mic capsules and Colette active accessories (all available separately).
It features a balanced XLR output, compliance with 12 or 48V phantom power, and low current consumption. Its Schoeps RFI Shield provides high immunity from RF interference for a clean, low-noise signal. The CMC 1 U supports the high maximum SPLs tolerated by the various MK mic capsules (available separately).

The MK 2XS is designed for placement in a diffuse sound field, i.e. at distances in reverberant environments where the greater portion of arriving sound has already been reflected from various room surfaces. In such placement the integrated frequency response of this capsule is essentially flat; the on-axis high-frequency response elevation shown in the graph below is not heard as such. It is remarkable how well-focused a recording can be made with omnidirectional microphones at such distances, when the microphones have been designed and placed appropriately. If this type of microphone is used close to the sound source, the emphasis of high frequencies for on-axis sound incidence would become clearly audible, producing an overly brilliant sonic impression. If miking distances more typical of the mono and early stereo era are to be used, a capsule such as the MK 2XS, with its full diffuse-field equalization, may well offer the optimal balance of focus, depth and spaciousness.

The Schoeps SG20 Microphone Stand Adapter is designed to stand mount microphones measuring 20mm or 21mm in diameter. The SG20 features a strong metal housing and a durable plastic clamp. Its base is threaded for 5/8"-27 stands, and a threaded adapter is included to accommodate 3/8" and 1/2" mounting. The angle is continuously variable.
